Founded in the 16th century by the nobleman Gabriele Colonna di Cesar\u00f2, the village experienced a period of great development under the rule of the Colonna family. The Ducal Palace, symbol of the Colonna family's power, is one of the main attractions of the historical centre. Over the centuries, Joppolo Giancaxio underwent several administrative transformations until it obtained municipal autonomy in 1926.
